Based in central Edinburgh, the Scottish Legal Aid Board (SLAB) is committed to improving the Scottish legal aid system for the legal profession, their clients and the public. We are looking for a Collections Officer to assist in the collection of all contributions, expenses, principal sums and other debts due to SLAB and to help to identify uncollectible debt at the earliest possible time.

The successful candidate should have experience in debt recovery systems and a similar debt recovery, credit control or general finance background. As well as have strong customer service and interpersonal skills and a good knowledge in basic computer/keyboard skills.


Main duties and responsibilities will include but not limited to:

• Review daily allocated cases, applying appropriate policies and procedures, to progress the case and maximise collection of the debt due.

• Deal with telephone calls from applicants, opponents and solicitors

• Negotiate repayment plans with debtors

• Impose and raise suspensions and terminations of Legal Aid Certificates for non-payment.

• Recommend Trace and pre-sue enquiries

• Identify possible modification cases and, where appropriate, advise solicitors to take the necessary action in expenses debts

• Arrange for taxations of cases through the courts, where required in expenses debts

• Recommend appropriate enforcement proceedings against defaulting debtors and prepare instruction for courts and sheriff officers/solicitors

• Recommend cases for write-off where recovery proves to be impossible or uneconomical

• Everyday administrative tasks like mailbox monitoring and record management

• Stakeholder engagement on multiple levels with applicants, opponents; solicitors; and other external bodies as required

• Ensure knowledge of all policy and procedure guidelines, regulations and legislation relevant to debt recovery is comprehensively updated as required
