The Civil Legal Assistance Office (CLAO) is looking for a talented social welfare solicitor to head our Inverness office. You will manage the delivery of legal services, which concentrate on the rights of people who are disadvantaged.
It is an exciting time to join our established network of offices. You will have the opportunity, as part of a small team of managers, to develop and shape the next phase of the CLAO network, building on the achievements of our 2017-2020 business plan.
Your day-to-day role will cover the Highland and Islands (where we are one of the largest groups of legal aid practitioners). You will manage a team of solicitors, as well as carry a caseload, in the provision of targeted social welfare legal services. As part of the CLAO network, you will have opportunities to practise in courts throughout the location your post serves, together with travel to our other locations, including our offices in Edinburgh and Aberdeen.
We work closely with other advice providers and support agencies as part of our work to triage and refer some cases to other solicitors, advisors or support organisations. Further general information on what we do within our offices across Scotland can be found at www.clao.org.uk.
You and your team will carry a demanding caseload comprising mainly of publicly funded housing law (repossession; homelessness; unlawful eviction; disrepair), child protection and mental health work. With a full, post-qualified and unrestricted practising certificate from the Law Society of Scotland, you will have excellent technical skills with particular expertise in publicly funded work and a commitment to the delivery of social welfare law. You will be highly organised and an effective leader with strong people management skills, good interpersonal skills and the ability to manage financial procedures. You must have solid experience of at least one of housing law, child protection and mental health law. Experience of all three is desirable. A full, clean driving licence is essential.
