The Scottish Legal Aid Board (SLAB) is committed to improving the Scottish legal aid system for the legal profession, their clients and the wider public.

We are looking for a solicitor to join a small team within the Legal Services department. Solicitors within this department do not deal with legal aid applications. The team provides in-house legal services to a variety of client departments within SLAB. You will be involved in providing legal advice and a full range of legal support services, including representation, as well as supporting the Principal Legal Adviser in the provision of legal services to the organisation, its Committees and its Executive Team. As part of the team, you will lead the organisation in the provision of technical legal advice as SLAB in turn provides advice to the Scottish Ministers in relation to development of statutory and regulatory changes relating to legal aid.

With (*normally) a full, post-qualified and unrestricted practising certificate from the Law Society of Scotland, you will have sound knowledge of legal aid legislation; knowledge of one or both of the civil and criminal justice systems; existing court experience, with robust knowledge of court procedure, as well as good pleading and representation skills. Excellent legal research skills, and well developed communication, facilitation and influencing skills are essential, as is a strong client /customer awareness, effective people skills and an ability to build effective relationships. Robust IT skills in the day-to-day legal context (Email, Word etc.,) are necessary to enable work to be self-generated with little or no admin support. You must also possess excellent judgement and self-motivation, with good planning and organisational skills. Knowledge, experience and/or a good awareness of equalities and diversity issues, data protection and freedom of information law
would be desirable.

*Normally a full practising certificate is required, but we may consider a restricted practising certificate depending on the circumstances surrounding these restrictions.

In return, our benefits package includes a competitive holiday entitlement and a contributory defined benefit pension scheme.
