Following recent internal promotions, the Civil Legal Assistance Office (CLAO) is now looking for three talented social welfare solicitors to join our established network of offices across Scotland. These roles cover the Highland and Islands (where we are the largest group of legal aid practitioners); Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire; and Argyll and Bute areas. As part of the CLAO network, you will have opportunities to travel to and practise in courts throughout the location your post serves and sometimes further afield to courts as far as Edinburgh and the Lothians. Ideally candidates would be able to cover the work of the Highland and Islands and Aberdeen areas from our offices in Inverness and Aberdeen respectively, but suitable candidates could work from alternative CLAO locations if they prefer. For the Argyll and Bute post we will consider candidates prepared to work in our offices in Edinburgh, Aberdeen or Inverness. We may also consider proposals to work from a different geographic location.

We work closely with other advice providers and support agencies as part of our work to triage and refer some cases to other solicitors, advisors or support organisations. Further general information on what we do within our offices across Scotland can be found at www.clao.org.uk.

All roles involve the provision of targeted social welfare legal services, concentrating on the rights of people who are disadvantaged. You will manage a demanding caseload comprising of publicly funded housing law (repossession; homelessness; unlawful eviction; disrepair) and child protection. With a full, post-qualified and unrestricted practising certificate from the Law Society of Scotland, you will have excellent technical skills with particular expertise in publicly funded work. You should be highly organised with strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to the delivery of social welfare law. You will have solid experience of at least one of housing law or child protection for the Aberdeen / Aberdeenshire post. For the remaining posts, solid experience of housing law is essential, with additional experience of child protection and mental health law desirable. A full, clean driving licence is highly desirable for Aberdeen role and essential for undertaking the remaining two roles.

In return our benefits package includes a competitive holiday entitlement and a contributory defined benefit pension scheme. Relocation expenses may be available in some circumstances. All CLAO city locations offer local schools, further education facilities (colleges and universities) and convenient transport links to other centres in Scotland and further afield. They also afford the opportunity for an excellent work/life balance, offering a range of social and cultural facilities, with easily accessible, beautiful countryside and beaches.

Please note that you will be considered for all locations detailed unless you indicate in your application form the location(s) for which you wish to be considered.
