The Civil Legal Assistance Office (CLAO) is a legal service operating through a mix of casework; referral to other providers of legal assistance and support; second tier support to other providers (including training); and partnership/development project working with local and national organisations operating in the defined geographical areas.

We’re looking for a solicitor with strong operational management and strategic focus to successfully manage and lead the service, ensuring that relevant strategic drivers which add value are developed and embedded in the activities of the service, with a consistent approach taken across the network. The role will have responsibility for ensuring CLAO delivers its strategic objectives as well as those of the Scottish Legal Aid Board (SLAB), with a strong focus on cost effectiveness of both civil legal assistance deliverables and of all non-casework spends.

An enrolled solicitor with (or having the capacity to hold) a full, unrestricted practising certificate from the Law Society of Scotland, you should have knowledge / experience of civil law and legal assistance. With significant management and leadership experience, you should demonstrate experience of achieving operational and strategic objectives along with excellent interpersonal, communication, organisational and customer service skills. Able to make sound, decisive decisions and work effectively under pressure, you must also have a good understanding of the challenges faced by the public sector and be able to deal effectively with challenging people or situations, diffusing conflict and building / maintaining relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
