The Scottish Legal Aid Board (SLAB) is looking for a criminal defence solicitor to join our Solicitor Contact Line (SCL). We are also inviting speculative applications for further solicitor vacancies that may be available over the next six months. The role involves providing legal advice via telephone in response to requests from individuals who are due to be interviewed in police custody: also attending police stations throughout Scotland to advise clients face-to-face and/or attending Police interviews.

If you are interested in being considered for the current vacancy, or any future roles over the next six months, please complete the application form provided.

To be eligible for these roles you must be an enrolled solicitor with the Law Society of Scotland, with a full, current, unrestricted practising certificate from the LSS; a current valid driving licence, with immediate access to a car on an as-required basis and insurance cover for business use; an in-depth working knowledge of the criminal justice system and legal aid; and criminal court experience in Scots Law. Computer literacy in Word, Excel, time and case recording would be highly desirable.

Based primarily at our headquarters in Edinburgh, coupled with some homeworking, you would be working a variable shift pattern covering a 24/7 all year round service. You should be willing to attend police stations across Scotland and elsewhere in the UK, providing individuals with advice. In addition to providing legal advice you will also be required to carry out administrative tasks, desk based legal tasks and other general related tasks as directed by the SCL Team Leader.

In return our benefits package includes a competitive holiday entitlement and a contributory defined benefit pension scheme. Completed applications for our current vacancy should be returned by 5pm on 2 April 2018. Interviews may be held at short notice thereafter.

Applications for further speculative roles will be considered until 17 September 2018. Any vacancies which arise may be filled quickly as required within the six month period, so please apply for these roles at your earliest convenience and we'll provide periodic updates.
