The Civil Legal Assistance Office (CLAO) is looking for a civil casework solicitor to join our team in Inverness, covering cases within the Highland, Moray, Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland areas.

As part of a network of four offices across Scotland, you will provide targeted social welfare legal services. As the CLAO works closely with the local legal profession and other advice providers to maximise the advice services available to members of the public, you will also be involved in some referral, second tier advice and training provision. The casework will comprise a range of civil and children’s legal assistance in areas such as housing and homelessness; money and debt; child protection and mental health. In addition the geographical area covered by the office, there is an expectation that work is covered across our network of offices in accordance with business needs; therefore sometimes travelling may be required to meet the business needs in other offices e.g. to Argyll and Bute, Aberdeen and/or Edinburgh.

In order to undertake this work successfully you will need the self-motivation, tenacity and integrity to deliver high-quality advice and representation. Further information on what we do within our Inverness office and across Scotland generally can be found at www.clao.org.uk.

With (*normally) a full, post-qualified and unrestricted practising certificate from the Law Society of Scotland and a full, clean driving license, you will have a good knowledge of the civil justice and legal aid systems. Experience in social welfare issues would be helpful.

*Normally a full practising certificate is required, but we may consider a restricted practising certificate depending on the circumstances surrounding these restrictions.

In return our benefits package includes a competitive holiday entitlement and a contributory defined benefit pension scheme. Interviews may be held in Inverness at short notice thereafter, likely in week beginning 5 March.
