Salary:£17.33 per hour

Working pattern:Guaranteed Minimum Hours basis, Fixed Term or Permanent

Location:Edinburgh

Closing date:15 May 2016 at midnight

The Scottish Legal Aid Board (SLAB) has opportunities for criminal defence solicitors to join our Solicitor Contact Line (SCL) in providing legal advice via telephone in response to requests from suspects who are due to be interviewed in police custody: also on occasion, to attend police stations throughout Scotland to advise clients face-to-face and/or to attend Police interviews.

All contracts will be on a guaranteed minimum hours basis – the guaranteed hours to be agreed during or following interview. Additional hours are also available thereafter, as well as opportunities for overtime. These roles are available on a one year fixed term or permanent appointment basis.

To be eligible for these roles you must be an enrolled solicitor with the Law Society of Scotland, with a *full, current, unrestricted practising certificate from the LSS; a current valid driving licence, with immediate access to a car on an as-required basis and insurance cover for business use; an in-depth working knowledge of the criminal justice system and legal aid; and criminal court experience in Scots Law. Computer literacy in Word, Excel, time and case recording would be highly desirable.

*Normally a full practising certificate is required, but we may consider a restricted practising certificate depending on the circumstances surrounding these restrictions.

Based at our headquarters in Edinburgh you would be working a variable shift pattern (currently based on a 12 hour shift pattern). In addition to providing legal advice to suspects you will also be required to carry out administrative tasks, basic legal tasks and other general related tasks as directed by the SCL Team Leader.

For candidates who live out-with Edinburgh / the Central belt, we would expect them to be available for attendances at Police stations in their local area where applicable.

In return our benefits package includes a competitive holiday entitlement and a contributory defined benefit pension scheme.

NB Interviews may be held at short notice after the closing date.
